PRESS RELEASE: Georgia Clean Energy Economy Driving Explosive Job Growth Pew Charitable Trusts, June 10, 2009

Georgia has a large and growing piece of America’s clean energy economy. With more
than 16,000 jobs in the clean energy economy in 2007, the state beat the
national average of 15,106 jobs. Georgia attracted nearly $180 million in
venture capital in the past three years, most of which has supported clean
energy generation, and ranks ninth among states in the number of clean
technology patents. The Georgia Public Service Commission recently
approved a request from Georgia Power Company to convert one of its
large, coal-fired power plants to biomass. The plant, located near Albany,
Georgia, is expected to produce 96 megawatts of capacity, making it one of
the largest biomass power plants in the country.
